Have you ever wondered what the best hair and skin care for older women really look like? Me too! My hair and skin have changed so much as I age and nothing works like it used to. The routine I had for years no longer did me any justice. Are you in the same boat? It’s time to really get to know your hair and skin on a more personal level.
Menopause played havoc with your hormones and your hormones paid you back with unruly hair and rough, wrinkly skin. You deserve to look amazing and feel great about it. So you require a little more TLC than you did in your 20s, 30s, or even in your 40s. That’s ok because these simple tips for hair and skin care for older women will have people trying to guess your real age in no time.
We reached out to a leading expert in the field of hair, make-up, and skin care. We asked her questions to help you better understand how to take care of all three for yourself. This post is all about the best way to make a mature woman look and feel beautiful, along with some do’s and don’ts.
Ask An Expert – Tips For Hair and Skin Care For Older Women
Allow me to introduce you to Rose G. She has kindly agreed to answer some of your most burning questions about make-up, hair, and skin care for older women. Her answers might surprise you. I know I was surprised!
Who ARe You?
Q – Tell us about yourself and why you chose a career in beauty and esthetics
Rose G – A career in hairstyling and esthetics is an outlet for my artistic creativity. The canvases are hair, skin, and nails. I can create endless designs and use a multitude of colors. There are never two identical creations and it never gets boring.
Q – How long have you been in the industry
Rose G – I started in the industry 35 years ago (in 1986)
Trends
Q – What are some trends you are seeing that are really silly for hair, skincare, and make-up
Rose G – The trends for hair and makeup since the millennium have been quite neutral. Noting too dramatic. Easy to keep up with.
Q – What are some new trends that would be beneficial for someone in midlife and beyond
Rose G – Anyone who is middle-aged would be pleased to know that grey hair is in. This is the result of the personal service sector being closed down during the pandemic. As our hair grew, so did our roots. A whole new trend began by stripping our color and adding a grey toner to match the roots. A perfect example is long-time Canadian news anchor Lisa Laflamme.
Frankly, I think she is stunning with her gorgeous grey hair. See for yourself.
No-No’s
Q – What is the number one mistake people make when it comes to:
-skincare
-hair care
-makeup
Rose G – Skincare – Can’t forget that your skin thrives on healthy nutrients and hydration. Take care of your skin from the inside out. The food we eat and the supplements we take are just as important as the topical products we use. Drink lots of water. Remember – skincare products will never stop the aging process.
Haircare – Long hair and dark colors make middle-aged people look older. Shoulder-length hair is the limit and nothing darker than a medium brown even if your natural color is dark.
Makeup – My biggest pet peeve in the industry is the over-dramatized eyebrow. First of all, eyebrows should be sisters, not twins! They could be filled in if sparse but should look as natural as possible. In our 50’s+ less (makeup) is more!
Healthy Routine
Q – Could you describe for our readers a healthy routine for:
-aging skin
-aging hair
Skin
Rose G – Routine for skin (always use products for your skin type – oily, dry, normal)
-cleanse, tone, and moisturize every day
This routine will keep your skin from developing too much oil or drying out. A healthy routine produces healthy skin.
-exfoliate one to two times per week
Exfoliation helps you shed dead skin and leaves the new skin looking brighter. With the dead skin gone, topical products work better. No sense in spending money on skincare products if they are being applied to dead skin cells.
-apply night cream around the eyes
Night cream helps to boost collagen which is something that we lose as we grow older and start going through menopause. Collagen keeps the skin supple and reduces wrinkles and fine lines.
Hair
Routine for hair
-trim regularly
Stylists recommend that cutting 1″ to 1.5″ every 12 weeks or so will remove any split ends from blow-drying, curling, straightening, or brushing. Your hair will look healthier and grow stronger.
-don’t forget to condition (moisturizer for hair)
Conditioner keeps the hair from damage caused by the elements and daily wear and tear. It keeps the hair looking soft and healthy. It also helps to tame those unruly greys. Not just any old conditioner will do. Select one that best suits your hair type. Without some kind of conditioner in your hair, it can become very dry and brittle. The best conditioners for grey hair will contain purple pigments to help reduce the brassy tones that going grey can produce.
Q – If you had to recommend just one thing that men and women in their 50s+ should be doing to take care of their skin and hair, what would that be, and why
Rose G – One thing men and women should do to take care of their skin and hair is eat foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, or take a supplement. This provides us with the ammunition needed to help fight wrinkles and helps with oil production in our skin and hair.
Favorite Products
Q – What are your favorite products that you would recommend for the following:
-Hair
-Skin
-Makeup
Hair Products
Rose G – My favorite hair products are:
-Schwarzkopf hair color, Tresemme hair spray, natiral bristle round brush
It would appear that thousands of others online agree with Rose on this one. They rate it one of the best hair colors on the market. The pre-color serum helps protect the hair from damage and breakage. The color goes on evenly and lasts longer than most other brands.
Your hair deserves to be treated with respect. This natural bristle round brush from Amazon allows the natural oils produced by the hair to be evenly spread along each strand. It reduces frizz and gives your hair a beautiful luster.
Skin Products
-My favorite skincare products are:
-Kiehls calendula and aloe soothing hydrating mask, and Aveeno Positively Radiant cleanser
This hydrating and cooling mask from Kiehl’s refreshes and hydrates the skin leaving it looking healthy and soft. They can remove excess oil and exfoliate at the same time. And, they can improve the appearance of pores to make your skin appear more even. If you are prone to breakouts or redness, a face mask may be helpful in reducing instances of both by deep cleansing the pores
Makeup Products
-My favorite makeup items are:
-Annabelle Stay Sharp eyeliner, Maybelline New York The Nudes eyeshadow palette, micellar water makeup remover
Eyeliner is one of the few makeup items that we really need as we age. Let’s e real for a minute. Our eyelids tend to become a little droopy and our eyelashes will fade to a dull color if not turn grey altogether. Eyeliner will help make the eyes look wider and help make the lashes look fuller. The Annabelle Stay Sharp liner is perfect for that. It works just like the mechanical pencil that you had in school, a simple twist will give the liner extra length. No need for a sharpener ever again.
The inventors of micellar water, Bioderma, wanted to give women something effective without the harsh chemicals of regular makeup removers. This micellar water cleans 95%+ of the makeup and dirt without any harsh scrubbing or rinsing required. It helps naturally rehydrate your skin and soothes the skin without irritating it as it cleans.
